When it comes to caring for your car's paint, waxing is the first thing to come to mind. It makes an immediate difference in how your car looks and feels. It also serves the crucial purpose of protecting your paint from the effects of the environment. Waxes and sealants protect your paint from the sun's damaging rays.
Waxes have been around for a long time. They utilize Carnauba and other waxes to give wetness, shine and protection. Sealants are the new kid on the block. They are more synthetic in nature. They are often more durable and give a slightly different “look” than traditional waxes.
How do you know which one to choose? Well, that is up to you and your needs. Are you looking for a product that cleans, polishes and offers protection all in one? In that case, look for a one-step or cleaner wax. If you are using a glaze or other product after polishing, then go with a pure wax free of cleaners. Sealants typically don't include cleaners, so they should be used on a freshly polished surface.
As a general rule, darker and solid colors tend to look best with carnauba waxes. They make darker colors look wetter and deeper. Metallic paint looks very nice with a sealant on top. Sealants tend to be a bit more clear, so more of the metal flake is able to be seen and “pop” out of the finish.
